WOODLAND-

The Yolo County District Attorney announced that the Yolo County Superior Court Judge Danile Maguire awarded $75,135.00 to Yolo County after their handling of convictions of an illegal cockfighting operation.

In January, a Yolo County Jury convicted Lorenzo Ponce, 63, of Dunnigan, on all charges related to his underground cockfighting operation. In February, he was sentenced to 20 days in county jail and 3 years probation.

The DA’s office requested $106,235.00 from Ponce for the cost of housing, caring for, and at times euthanizing the chickens taken from Ponce’s property. Ponce contested and they scheduled a hearing. In that hearing, the Sheriff’s Animal Control division testified about the money the county lost over the 60 days of caring for the birds before they animal control had to euthanize the chickens.

The money will reimburse Sheriff Ed Prieto’s Animal Control Services division.

“Cockfighting is inhumane and cruel to the roosters and is also a costly nuisance to any county,” said Prieto. “In addition to the time it takes to arrest, book and investigate the offenders, counties must impoud and care for the birds until certain timelines are met and the birds are ultimately euthanized. We hope this will send a clear message to anyone else out there before they consider cockfighting in Yolo County.”
