SACRAMENTO-

Sacramento beat out four other cities to host the 2014 USA Track and Field National Championship, which starts Wednesday.

The event will have a large impact on the local economy. The Convention and Visitor’s Bureau expects $4.6 million to come in throughout the weekend.

“The idea is to bring in economic impact, to bring in an outside agency to produce an event in Sacramento,” Visitor’s Bureau V.P. Mike Tesa said.

But bringing the championships back to Sacramento didn’t come without a significant investment.

USA Track and Field agreed to have Sacramento host the event if the Sacramento State track was renovated. The visitors bureau along with the hotel community agreed, and a $1.3 million state-of-the-art facility was installed on the CSUSĀ campus.

“Right now, we have the best track in the world,” Testa said.

Once the event is over, the track will belong to the school.
