A Yuba City Syberian Husky made a big discovery on Monday night.
After three weeks of digging, she unearthed an unusual looking pot decorated with animal bones and other items. Her owner Nathaniel Oberman found a human skull inside the pot, which prompted him to call police.
“There were machetes, horns with shells wrapped around it, a whole bunch of animal skulls, I think coyote skulls, a goat skull and bunch of bird skulls,” Olberman said. “And then when the flower pot broke, we saw an actual mandible of a human skulls.”
Yuba City Police came out, put up crime tape and called anthropology experts from Chico State to examine the remains.
“The anthropologists think it could be an Afro-Caribbean religion which isn’t common up here so that’s what made it really odd and they were kind of excited about it too,” said Oberman.
According to the Appeal Democrat, experts told police they believe the items are related to traditions of an ancient West-African religion.
Yuba City Police say the age of the skull is what they’re most interested in. Foul play has not been ruled out yet.
