UPDATE: A second suspect in the chase and gun battle has died at the hospital.
Three people are dead after an armed bank robbery in Stockton led to a high-speed chase through San Joaquin County that ended in a deadly gun battle.
Stockton Police Officer Joe Silva spoke with FOX40 Wednesday afternoon about the incident.
Three armed men walked into a Bank of the West branch on Thornton Road around 2 p.m., Silva said. They left with three women at gunpoint.
One witness said officers on scene couldn’t make a move on the men because of those hostages. He told FOX40 that one of the women was thrown into the driver’s seat of an SUV and they sped off.
According to Officer Silva, the SUV led officers on a chase that lasted between 45 minutes to an hour. At one point, Silva says a hostage was shot and thrown from the car. Her condition was not immediately known.
The suspects were firing at officers with what Silva described as an AK-47 rifle.
Toward the end of the chase, a second hostage was thrown from the car. She had apparently been grazed by gunfire, Silva said. She was taken to the hospital.
The chase finally ended at Thornton Road and Otto Drive. Silva told FOX40 that there was an exchange of gunfire between officers and the suspects.
Ultimately, two suspects were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds. A third was pronounced dead at the scene.
A second suspect died later Wednesday night at the hospital.
The third hostage was killed during the shootout between officers and the suspects, police confirmed. It was unknown if the fatal shot was from police or the suspects.
Family identified the woman as Misty Singh.
Police also say there were reports of bystanders being struck by bullets during the chase and shootout at the end. The severity of injuries was unclear early Wednesday evening.
