Family of Antoinette Powell expressed their skepticism about the investigation of the car crash that killed their niece.
Antoinette Powell, 22, was with her best friend Shapre Nichols, 23, and Robnisha Briggs, 24. They were on their way home to Sacramento from a short road trip to Reno.
At around noon on Thursday, authorities responded to a solo car crash on I-80 near the Ophir Road exit. When they arrived, they pronounced Nichols (the driver) and Powell (back seat passenger) dead on scene. Briggs, who was in the front passenger seat, was the sole survivor. In a press release, the Auburn Area CHP stated, “Robnisha Briggs (age 24 from Sacramento) was transported by ground ambulance to Sutter Roseville Medical Center with minor injuries.”
However, Powell’s uncle, Tobias Murphy told FOX40, Briggs did not suffer minor injuries. Instead, was just released from the hospital, after enduring a broken leg, a broken ankle, and lacerations to the liver.
CHP also revealed in a release:
“The driver, for reasons still under investigation, lost control of her vehicle and swerved right across all traffic lanes and onto the right shoulder, where the vehicle struck a dirt/rock embankment.”
However, Murphy was told by Briggs that she remembered something else. “A car, a black vehicle was swerving, and cut them off, and forced Shapre to swerve,” Murphy said. “Shapre didn’t lose control on her own. Someone forced her to. And that person kept going.”
CHP has not yet revealed if there is evidence of another car causing the crash. But Murphy said he hopes the mystery driver will turn themselves in.
“If you saw Antoinette, Shapre was with her. If you saw Shapre, Antoinette was with her. They did everything together. Everything… And they really did at the end,” Murphy said.
The families are now trying to raise money for a joint funeral for the inseparable friends.
