A fire swallowed parts of four Modesto homes Tuesday afternoon, sending 19 cats from one home on Bleu Chappelle Court running out.
One by one, owner Lyman Vonhof tried to rescue all of them.
“I got three in the car, this one here that I think will make it, and the two that are in the back or something,” Lyman said.
Lyman and his wife, Lois, have already found six of them.
But Lyman fears the others might be gone and that he will have to say goodbye.
“We have 38 urns of kitties that we’ve cremated since we’ve been here in Modesto,” Lyman said.
As Lyman and his wife search for their pets, they are grateful to be alive.
The 83-year-old told FOX40 they escaped thanks to a neighbor, a 12-year-old boy who went from door to door, warning families to get out.
“I just jumped the fence and started warning them,” said Jesus Perez.
No one was injured in the fire.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
