The speed limit will be lowered to 55 mph along an accident-prone area of I-80 currently under construction.

Caltrans announced the lower speed limit Friday, in addition to new and more visible signs along the construction zone in Natomas.

FOX40 reported last month on the troubling increase in accidents along I-80 between West El Camino Avenue and Watt Avenue.

Caltrans is working on their “Across the Top” project, which will add carpool and bus lanes along the ten-mile stretch of interstate.

In the month of August, the number of accidents along that section of I-80 was triple the number of accidents during August 2013.

In their Friday announcement, Caltrans addressed the increase in accidents. “The primary types of traffic incidents were rear end collisions, primarily between Truxel and Northgate where motorists should slow down and stay alert,” Caltrans District 3 Construction Safety Engineer, Ed Yarbrough, stated.

CHP officers will be monitoring traffic in the construction area, and writing tickets for drivers going above the new 55 mph speed limit.
