The city of  Modesto is considering providing free public Wi-Fi in the downtown area. However, the City Council Economic Development Committee is a bit apprehensive.

According to the Modesto Bee, the committee is concerned whether or not the service will be financially self-sustaining. Their biggest concern being if it’s appropriate for the government to provide the service and spend as much as $100,000 on the project as Modesto struggles to have enough police officers and firefighters.

The city wants to bring free Wi-Fi to the area to draw more people downtown. Although some businesses downtown already offer free Wi-Fi, this will allow for  uninterrupted coverage as people won’t have to constantly sign in and out of different networks.

For this to happen,  the Economic Development Committee will have to approve the project and forward it to City Council for them to decide.
