Fires Close Part of I-80 in Placer County, Mandatory Evacuations in Place

Five different spot fires along Interstate 80 prompted the CHP to close eastbound lanes of the highway at Applegate.

According to Cal Fire spokesperson Daniel Berlant, five fires have burned a combined 350 acres and are threatening about 80 structures as of 6 p.m.

A FOX40 crew captured at least one burned structure, believed to be a home.

Berlant said the fires were suspicious, but an exact cause has yet to be released.

According to the Placer County Sheriff's Department, there are mandatory evacuations in place for the following streets in the Weimar/Applegate areas:

Pine Cone Peak

Hummingbird Hill Road

Panorama Lane

High View Lane

Hidden Meadow Way

Hidden Meado Court

Hidden Meadow Road

Pine Knoll Road

Quail Mountain Court

Sierra Pines Road

Applegate Road between Boole and Heather Glen

Ponderosa Way to State Park boundary

Bridge Trail Way

Brushy Ridge

Hidden Ridge

Cross Road

East Ridge

According to Caltrans, cars can use Bell Road to northbound Highway 49 as a detour. Big rigs are to use Highway 20.

Evacuation centers have been set up at Sierra Vista Community Center, 55 School St, Colfax (map), Veterans Memorial Hall, 24601 Harrison Street, Foresthill (map) and the Auburn Veterans Memorial Hall, 100 East Street, Auburn (map).
