EL DORADO COUNTY-

A day trip along the popular Rubicon Trail turned into an overnight stay and emergency situation for a couple, their 4-month-old baby and a friend.

Wednesday evening, El Dorado County Sheriff’s deputies got a 911 call from a man who said he, his wife, infant daughter and friend were unsure of their location somewhere along the Rubicon Trail near Loon Lake.

The man, Nicholas Kuminski of Fairfield, explained they had taken a Jeep along the popular trail, but became stuck Tuesday night. They decided to spend the night near the Rubicon Springs area, after they found an abandoned tent. The group had planned just a day trip along the trail, and was not prepared to spend the night in the wilderness.

Wednesday morning, they woke up and began walking, but became unsure of where they were headed. They were able to make their way to a clearing and get cell phone reception.

A CHP search helicopter flew overhead, and the crew was able to call Kuminski on his cell phone to help pinpoint their location.

The helicopter was able to find an open space to land nearby and found Kuminski, his wife, daughter and friend. Everyone was in good health, just tired and hungry.
