The bodies of two babies were found inside a Placer County storage unit, now investigators want to know how they got there and what happened to them.
Deputies were called back in November by a woman who recently purchased a storage unit in Colfax through an auction. She told them the unit had a strong foul odor.
"So we opened it, and as soon as we removed all the tape, got the lid off, it smelt really, really bad," owner Regina Zimmer said.
As deputies were going through the contents of the abandoned unit, they discovered the decomposing remains of a fetus or small infant.
Further examination of the contents of the unit uncovered a second fetus or small infant.
Placer County Sheriff's detectives are working to piece together the circumstances surrounding the bodies. Anyone with information about the abandoned storage unit is asked to call the detective at (530) 889-7894.
Investigators say a woman believed to be the infants' mother has been interviewed several times.
"A lot of things are thing are waiting on toxicology reports because they were in such poor shape. a lot of things we can't tell if it was a viable fetus or not," Placer County Sheriff's Lt. John Poretti said.
