A man was seriously injured late Sunday in a fire at a Modesto motel.

Firefighters responded to the Apex Inn shortly before midnight to find smoke coming from a room.

According to the Modesto Fire Department, crews had a tough time because furniture had apparently been stacked up against the door to the burning room. Once firefighters get inside, a man was found unresponsive.

He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Investigators are looking into what exactly caused the fire, and say about $5,000 in damage was caused.

No one else was hurt or displaced by the fire.
