A Turlock woman is in critical condition in a Bay Area hospital after she and another man were shot by her ex-husband near Crows Landing Saturday night.
The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office said Maricela Martinez was shot by her ex-husband, Mario Martinez, who also shot and killed a Modesto man, Mario Medina, before turning the gun on himself.
Deputies found the three along Kilburn Road near Villa Manucha Road southeast of Crows Landing.
Detectives said Mario Martinez called 9-1-1 to confess to the crime just before he took his own life.
Laly Deleon has been going to church with Maricela Martinez and her ex-husband for the past 13 years.
She's shocked he would do something like this.
"I've never seen Mario do (any thing like this)... He's a really good man, you know and marriage is hard," Deleon told FOX40.
Deleon said Maricela had divorced Mario Martinez just three months before the shooting.
Another friend told FOX40, Mario Martinez had taken the split hard and that Mario Medina was romantically involved with Maricela.
Friends said Medina leaves behind two daughters and that Mario and Maricela Martinez have two daughters and a son.
The Martinez's children are now with Maricela, who was airlifted to a hospital intensive care unit in the Bay Area.
"She's bad right now. She's getting surgery in this week," Deleon told FOX40, after speaking with Maricela's daughter.
Deleon said she would talk with Maricela every day, and thought her troubles with her ex-husband were behind her.
"Please pray for her. Pray for her daughter," Deleon said.
Both friends and detectives said they're still not sure why the three people were on Kilburn Road Saturday night.
