Graduate students told FOX40 they were surprised to learn that their educator, Dr. Keyes Kelly, was arrested for allegedly contacting a 13-year-old Stockton police decoy for lewd acts and arranging a meeting with a minor for lewd acts.
Stockton educator and private piano teacher Keyes Kelly, 70, is a man of many talents, according to those who know him, and now he's facing serious charges.
On Tuesday, the unsettling news reached graduate students like Ray Chin.
“For someone with that education, with that expertise … it was a total shock to me,” Chin told FOX40 on Tuesday.
Chin had been Kelly’s student for the past few months at Humphrey’s College in Stockton.
“The night before, I received an email from my counselor saying that Dr. Kelly is taking a personal leave of absence, and I thought that was kind of strange,” Chin said.
The aspiring first grade teacher explains that he was completely taken aback by the allegations against his teacher.
He saw Kelly as a kind, soft spoken instructor.
“He always seemed positive, energetic, really lenient and flexible,” he said.
FOX40 also spoke to another one of his grad students who says that he was a little weird but still the same response — she was shocked when she heard the allegations against Kelly.
“He just had that passion for education, for teaching,” Chin said.
Stockton Police investigators and the San Joaquin District Attorney’s office are looking for potential victims.
Kelly has been a private piano teacher for at least 14 years.
He’s taught many courses, and has been a education consultant.
“It’s kind of hard to justify… sex with a minor,” he said.
