A man pleaded guilty Thursday to a hit and run crash that killed retired Stockton Police investigator Jimmy Pendergrass.

Sergio Chavira, 57, was charged with felony hit and run and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. He will be sentenced August 5.

Police say Pendergrass was killed walking across the street to the Stockton Police station late December 2014, where he worked part-time in background investigations.

The suspect vehicle, Chavira’s green minivan, was found Christmas Day outside a homeless shelter.

During his time with the Stockton Police Department, Pendergrass was a traffic investigator.
