An elderly couple, well liked in their Modesto community, dealt with a horrifying situation Friday night after criminals broke into their home on the 1400 block of Gary Lane and attacked.

Richard Iverson, 94, was hit in the face by the intruders and is now in the intensive care unit in a coma at Memorial Medical Center fighting for his life, according to neighbors.

The Modesto Police Department says his 85-year-old wife Maurine was uninjured.

Joe Rykert has lived near the Iversons for decades and had nothing but good things to say about Richard.

"He's one of the sweetest people you could ever have the honor of knowing," he said.

Lt. Brandon Gillespie with the Modesto Police Department said the report they received stated two suspects were involved, one being a woman.

Authorities are actively searching for the suspects, however, they have little information to go off of at this point.
