STOCKTON —

A man was shot to death as he was driving on Hammer Lane in Stockton on Tuesday afternoon, on a day that’s supposed to be about community and police coming together.

Tuesday was the 32nd annual National Night Out, a nationwide event in which law enforcement and other local agencies visit block parties and thank communities for keeping the street and neighborhood safe.

Stockton police received a report of gunshots near Hammer Lane and Lan Ark Drive about 3:30 p.m., Stockton police spokesman Joe Silva said.

Witnesses say several shots were fired at a car, hitting the man driving, police said.

The car continued to drive down Hammer Lane, striking several cars. The car came to a stop near Tam O Shanter Drive.

A 19-year-old man was the only person in the vehicle. He was transported to an area hospital where he died from his injuries.
