Nearly 30,000 students in Modesto are caught in the middle of negotiations between
Modesto City Schools and the Modesto Teacher's Association.
"Our schedules are held prisoner," parent Kim Mellow told FOX40 Wednesday, adding that she cannot plan her Christmas vacation since the schedule at 34 schools in Modesto stop at the end of August. "Not being able to plan affects everybody's lives.
The Administration at Modesto City Schools has been negotiating with the Teacher's
Association since February and no agreement has been reached.
"We cannot schedule out the entire year," Modesto City School spokesperson Becky
Fortuna told FOX40. "It's a negotiation process. We have to come to an agreement with both of our employee groups in order to have a full calendar."
Interim director of the Modesto Teacher's Association Dana Fillipi tells FOX40 the latest negotiations are about which week Spring Break should fall, a small part of a much larger disagreement, he says.
"We basically accepted the district's proposal. The district did not accept our acceptance of the proposal," Fillipi told FOX40 Wednesday.
Modesto City School officials would not comment on the negotiations, but did say they hope to come to an agreement as soon as possible.
If not, Fortuna says school calendars will be renegotiated at the beginning of each month.
