REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (AP) —

A Northern California man has been arrested on suspicion of killing a toddler in his care.

Redwood City police said officers were called to an apartment Thursday afternoon, where they encountered 27-year-old Daniel Contreras and an unresponsive 16-month-old girl.

Authorities said Contreras claimed the child accidentally fell from a table, but an autopsy concluded her death was a homicide.

Contreras was arrested after midnight Saturday and booked for investigation of child abuse and homicide.

No further details were released.
