MODESTO --

As Brianna Blackston holds up pictures of her boyfriend, Zachary McGee, her voice breaks and she’s overcome by the grief of losing her life partner and father of her two kids.

“I don’t know, but I know he couldn’t have been targeted because he didn’t have any problems,” Blackston said. She agreed to speak with FOX40 but did not want to show her face.

Blackston explained that she and McGee went to X Fest on Saturday with separate groups of friends. After the music festival, they heard of a party at a warehouse on Kansas Avenue in Modesto.

“He wasn’t even supposed to be there. He told me he wasn’t coming,” she said.

“Gunshots just start flying everywhere,” she recalled.

Modesto police investigators said McGee was killed and seven others, including Blackston, were injured about 3 a.m. on Sunday.

“Whoever it was, the shots were getting closer so I ran around the car, and I hid under the car. People were like trampling over me,” she recalled.

Among the chaos Blackston says found herself next to her dying boyfriend.

“I’m panicking. I run outside and everyone’s hovering over this body and it was him on the ground,” she said.

She recalled someone giving him CPR but she knew it was too late.

“I was, like, laying right next to him. I knew he passed away because he stopped breathing.”

The death has brought a great deal of pain to their family, a loss she’s still trying to explain.

“(I’ll miss) everything, he’s my best friend. We were together almost ten years… high school.”

Police have not released a motive for the shootings nor a suspect(s).

The family has also set up a GoFundMe page in order to help pay for funeral costs.
