RANCHO CORDOVA --

A young child was shot in the back while sleeping on a couch in a living room of a Rancho Cordova quadplex Thursday morning.

The 4-year-old boy, who family say is named Adrian, suffered one shot to the back.

Investigators says as of 7 a.m.Thursday morning, the boy had gone into surgery as the bullet lodged itself one-inch from his heart.

The grandmother of the boy was also hit during the shooting, she was shot once in the wrist and is expected to recover.

Investigators with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department and Rancho Cordova Police Department used horizontal evidence markers to show bullet holes just below the homes second story window.

It is unknown if the shooter fired from a car, our just outside the complex.

Family of the child and grandmother say the quadplex had been shot at before, however, those bullets ended up below a window of another second story home in the same building.

"That was back in April," an unidentified family member said.

Croetto Way, the street where the shooting took place, has seen many instances of violence in the past and is considered home to gang members according to police.

"This is very scary, but not unusual here," neighbor Angelique Salazar said.

Police are having a difficult time getting much information on the possible suspect or suspects.

One of the victims family members was detained for questioning, but it was not known why that person was put in handcuffs.

Police tell FOX40 the probability of retaliation for Thursday morning's shooting is "extremely high."
