NATOMAS --

Monday's groundbreaking of Natomas Charter School's Star Academy on Gloster Way celebrated the first school to begin construction in Natomas since a building moratorium was lifted earlier this year.

The students currently meet inside an industrial building.

"Just the possibility of seeing grass and windows in their classrooms is very exciting," said the school's Executive Director Ting Sun.

Classes at the K-through-five academy's new location are scheduled to begin next fall.

While the building moratorium was in place for six years, awaiting nearby levee improvements to increase flood protection, Natomas' student population grew by 2,000 kids.
