MODESTO —

Modesto police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found in a car in a shopping center parking lot Monday morning.

Police said they received a call just before 10:30 a.m. reporting an unresponsive man near the intersection of McHenry Avenue and Leveland Lane — in the shopping center parking lot that contains the Hobby Lobby store.

When first responders arrived on scene they determined the man, identified as 37-year-old Brian Abeyta, was a victim of homicide, according to police.

Police believe Abeyta was shot while sleeping in his truck sometime over the weekend.

The investigation is ongoing.
