WEST SACRAMENTO --

Taking out the dogs was a normal part of the Hatfields' morning routine on Pender Island Street in West Sacramento -- until it wasn't.

"When I let them out, I felt like a draft, checked like the windows and noticed the kitchen drawers had been opened," Melissa Hatfield said. "The car, the trunk, was open. I looked around, my purse was gone, ran upstairs, grabbed my husband and said, 'Someone was in our house!'"

It's the same kind of thing police say happened Saturday night into Sunday morning on Pender Island, Malcolm Island and four other streets around town.

Access was gained to cars and at least one house, in each case,  through unlocked doors.

At the Hatfields', the thieves got inside after finding a garage door opener in an open truck outside.

They now missing  laptops, tools -- even 'Disney on Ice' tickets -- are nowhere near the biggest concern for this family.

"I was immediately very emotional because we have kids. And, you know, it's like, what if they took my kid? That was a big thing for me," Hatfield said through tears.

As far as mom and dad can tell, burglars never headed upstairs, but after that close call, they say another set of thieves will never get the chance.

"The one time we didn't lock a vehicle it happened to us. The one thing I can say from experience is, make sure everything's locked up. You know, don't leave windows --anything -- people are out there and anybody can be a target," Hatfield said.

That's the same advice West Sacramento police officers are handing out.

They've yet to identify any suspects in this case, though one neighbor did spot a suspicious blue car on Pender Island Street around the time of the break-in.

If you're wondering about the Disney on Ice' tickets, Ticketmaster worked with the Hatfields and now they have new seats for an upcoming performance.
