FAIRFIELD —

Fairfield police say one man is under arrest after a vehicle he was allegedly driving on East Travis Boulevard struck a pedestrian before hitting a PG&E power pole on Wednesday morning.

About 5:20 a.m., a vehicle police say was driven by 31-year-old Nathan Vargas hit a pedestrian who was crossing westbound San Bruno Street in the crosswalk.

Police say it appears the driver of the vehicle was traveling the wrong way and partially on the sidewalk.

Vargas appeared to be driving under the influence of a controlled substance, according to police.

The 44-year-old pedestrian, a Fairfield resident, died on scene. The victim’s identity has not yet been released.
