MODESTO --

A woman was found dead Saturday after an early morning motel fire in Modesto. The Modesto and Ceres Fire Departments battled the blaze at the Arrow Inn on South 9th Street just after 5:00 a.m.

The Ceres Fire Department didn't confirm whether or not the victim died because of the fire or died before the fire started.

Nikki Levan lives next door to the room where the fire ignited and said a woman recently checked in, "They rented the room I guess the day before yesterday."

Motel Manager Gary Patel couldn't say if the woman that rented the room is the same one that was found deceased.

The fire destroyed the room it started in and damaged up to 20 other rooms because the flames traveled through the attic, according to Pate.

"Our whole ceiling is torn down. It's going to take quite a while to fix," he said.

The identity of the deceased woman hasn't been released.

Fire investigators are looking into the cause of the blaze while Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department detectives are investigating the death.
