STOCKTON -- The Stockton Police Department is investigating a hit and run accident involving a teen boy who was riding his bike home from school.
Painted in red and black, a bike seen on cell phone video was Arturo Largaespada’s much needed Christmas gift. Now, it’s a total mess after the teen said he was hit by a car on Thursday.
"Like I was on the floor and I just got up and I was like, ‘Oh my goodness. What just happened right now? I was hit by a car.' Everything was just like running so quickly,” 15-year-old Largaespada explained.
He said he was riding his bike North on B Street near Zephyr Street in Stockton around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday. He told FOX40 that he noticed a maroon 4-door car that was coming up a little too close.
"I look back and I see a car like right behind me — like, about a foot or six inches right behind me — and it takes my bike and I kind of fly off my bike,” he said.
He claimed the bike went underneath the car. Fortunately, his backpacked cushioned his fall when he landed.
“[The] driver got out of his car, first went to check on his car if it had any dents or scratches, and he came to me and was like, ‘Oh, are you OK?’,” he claimed.
The teen said he was stunned and shaken, but able to reply.
“I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m OK. But my bike’s pretty messed up.’ He’s like, ‘Yeah, the back tire’s pretty messed up.’"
Largaespada said those words marked the end of their short conversation.
“He got into his car and drove away,” he said.
The Stockton Police Department has classified the accident as a hit and run. The reason? If someone is injured in an accident and the driver leaves the scene without first identifying themselves, they can be charged with a crime according to California state law.
“I’ve never been through anything like this before," Largaespada said.
The teen walked the rest of the two miles to his house, called his parents who then called police. He was a little scratched and bruised on Friday and hoping the driver and any witness would come forward.
The boy said the man who hit him is a Hispanic male in his 20s or 30s, who had a beard and black hair.
