An adult died and two children were injured Tuesday after being struck by a school bus in Lawrence, Indiana, said Rita Reith with the Indianapolis Fire Department.

The incident occurred at Amy Beverland Elementary School as buses were lined up for the end of the day dismissal.

“Everything was just kind of routine. At some point, the bus did jump the curb, again made contact with two of the students, hit an adult and that adult is deceased,” Reith told reporters.

She said the students, both age 10, were taken to a hospital in serious condition. They are not thought to have suffered life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the bus was OK and was giving a statement to police, Reith said. It wasn’t immediately clear why the bus jumped the curb.

“These are children. We send them here for education. With all of the other things that are going on at schools across the United States, as you may know, this is a parent’s worst nightmare,” Mickah Williams, a father of a 10-year-old and a 7-year-old, told CNN affiliate WTHR.

“We’re holding on optimistically with prayer and hopefully all the kids are OK,” he said.
