SACRAMENTO —

A man is under arrest after police say he stole a car with two young children inside it on Thursday afternoon.

A woman parked her car in a gas station parking lot on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard near Fruitridge Road about 12:30 p.m. Thursday. A 5-year-old and 6-year-old were left inside the vehicle with the engine still on and the air conditioner running while the woman quickly ran into the store.

When the woman returned to her car, a man was in the driver’s seat.

The man drove off in the vehicle with the two children still inside. He drove northbound on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and was followed by witnesses.

The man stopped the car at 23rd Avenue and fled on foot.

The Sacramento Police Department and probation officers were able to detain the suspect.

He was identified as 29-year-old Shaun Masse. The suspect was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail and faces charges of kidnapping and possession of a stolen vehicle.

Police do not think Masse knew the victims.
