MODESTO -- For every picture Dan Joseph hangs of a man or woman dressed in their military best he knows a little of their history, a little of their life and appreciates their ultimate sacrifice.

“I feel saddened, you know, for the loss, but I also feel very grateful because it's because of their sacrifice that we are free today,” Joseph said.

For the past seven years, Joseph has dedicated his front lawn in Modesto to the 55 soldiers, Marines and Navy heroes who died in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“We have Memorial Day to remember the awesome sacrifices that men and women have made to keep us free,” he said.

Joseph said sometimes families leave little trinkets, flowers and more pictures and will sometimes share memories.

“But I can certainly do something about keeping the memory of their loved one alive and that's what I'm doing here,” he told FOX40.

A memorial for the fallen, a reminder of what freedom costs.

The memorial is set up at 2109 Woodland Avenue in Modesto and will remain up until the Tuesday after Memorial Day.
