TURLOCK — George, the missing desert tortoise from Turlock, has been returned safe, according to its caretaker.

Richard Melton, who is taking care of the animal for someone else, says someone rang the doorbell and ran off, leaving the 15-year-old tortoise.

Melton told FOX40 that he suspects the person who had George possibly mistook him for an aquatic turtle, and that could be why he’s moving slow — by tortoise standards.

Several people have donated money to help find George. Melton says he plans to return the money.
