TUOLUMNE COUNTY — Two Modesto hikers were found safe Friday afternoon following a days-long search that involved 10 different agencies, officials said.

Mark Smallwood, his girlfriend Donna Halberg and their dog set off in the Pinecrest area in Stanislaus National Forest on Sunday for a three-day trip, but weren’t heard from after that.

According to the Tuolumne County sheriffs, the couple came into contact with some campers at Cleos Bath, a restaurant in Pinecrest, and used their phone to call family.

Helicopters are heading to that location to pick up Smallwood and Halberg.
