WINTERS -- A 4,000-acre vegetation fire is burning near Highway 128, in the area of Monticello Dam Road and Cold Creek Canyon Road.

The CHP has issued an evacuation order for Canyon Creek Resort. Golden Bear Estates off County Road 34 has also been evacuated. Officials say 35 homes are threatened at this time. Highway 128 is closed at Pleasants Valley Road.

Cal Fire said the fire is burning through grass and woodlands. The fire is wind driven and the terrain is making it hard to access the flames. Ground crews will continue battling the fire through the night.

The Winters Police Department is urging drivers to use extreme caution if they are traveling through the area due to firefighting equipment and smoke drift.

The so-called Cold Fire was first reported about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The fire is at five percent containment. Officials do not know what sparked the fire.

An evacuation center has been set up at the Winters Public Safety Center at 700 Main Street.
