MODESTO -- It's a daily necessity for some, but on the streets, a shower is hard to come by. Washing off after a long, hot day means a lot to Modesto's homeless.

"It kind of gives me hope," said Robert Luther Thomas Sr.

Church in the Park wants everyone to have that feeling after using its new Cleansing Hope Shower Shuttle. A hygiene kit with a towel, wash cloth, shower shoes, new underwear and socks gives people everything they need for a relaxing 10-minute shower. They can even shave.

It took nearly a year and $35,000 in donations to transform an old bus into the shower on wheels, but Church in the Park President Dean Dodd said giving those down on their luck a sense of normalcy makes the hard work worth it.

"You hear a lot of singing going on inside of the stalls," said Dodd.

The shower parks at Vine House Ministries. It's open Mondays and Wednesdays from 9am until about 3pm at 523 South Martin Luther King Drive.

Sock, underwear and triple-blade razor donations are needed. Anyone willing to donate can do so at www.showershuttle.com.
