DELHI -- A Merced County sheriff's deputy has been shot and is in critical condition, Sheriff Vern Warnke said.
The shooting reportedly happened at Harmony Ranch Drive and Harmony Court in Delhi.
Deputies responded to a house in the area for a domestic dispute call. When they got to the home, the suspect, identified as 38-year-old Jose Torres, came out of the home with an "assault-style" weapon and fired at deputies.
Deputies returned fire, hitting and killing Torres.
According to officials, one deputy was taken to Doctors Hospital in Modesto with two gunshot wounds to the lower body and went through surgery. According to the sheriff, the deputy is awake and talking. He is expected to make a full recovery.
No other details were immediately available.
