DAVIS -- A mother came home to her apartment on Shasta Drive in Davis Thursday night to find something seriously wrong. Davis Police say her 7-week-old baby was badly hurt, with severe trauma to the head.
Realizing this was no accident, police began investigating after the infant was taken to the hospital.
"We developed information to believe the child had possibly been shaken or there had been some kind of trauma," said Deputy Police Chief David Delaini.
Delaini says investigators believe the little boy's father, 36-year-old Victor Duarte Briones abused his baby when he was supposed to be watching him.
"We developed information to identify the father as the suspect, as he had been left alone with the child during the period when these injuries developed," Delaini said.
The child was transferred to the ICU at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento to recover from the serious trauma.
Now, a mother must cope with the fact that her newborn baby is badly hurt and the baby's father is being blamed.
"From the condition of the child, and the statement to the mother, it didn't appear to have been an accident," Delaini said.
Briones is facing a charge of child abuse with serious bodily injury. He's being held at the Yolo County Jail on $500,000 bail.
