SACRAMENTO -- Matt Lambert was quick to make a friend, went out of his way to help people, and would do anything to put a smile on his mother's face, according to relatives.
So his stepfather Gerald Claypool says he never imagined he’d be killed by someone he knew.
"He was almost too nice of a person to a fault," Claypool said. "He brought people into his home that now we know he probably shouldn’t have."
On Wednesday night, the 26-year-old was shot to death by James Feci.
If Feci looks familiar, it may be because the 45-year-old unsuccessfully ran for Rancho Cordova City Council in 2014. Speaking at a candidate's forum, he said he was an Air Force veteran.
Claypool wasn’t there, but tells FOX40 he heard what happened from several witnesses.
According to Claypool, Lambert was angry with Feci for speaking negatively about his girlfriend. Feci and Lambert then got into a "wrestling" match. Feci left, returned with a gun, and started shooting, Claypool says.
Claypool didn't know how Feci and Lambert met each other. He says Lambert and his best friend were renting a house, needed a third roommate, and Feci and his family moved in.
Feci bailed out of jail Friday after being charged with voluntary manslaughter.
Lambert was the second oldest of eight siblings, including a twin sister. Loved ones tell FOX40 he was proudest of his role of uncle to nine nieces and nephews. They're preparing themselves for what they believe to be a long road towards justice.
Lambert's family has started a GoFundMe campaign to help pay for funeral expenses.
