Local Burn Survivor Awarded Special Honor by Firefighters Union

SACRAMENTO -- A teen burn survivor is getting the experience of a lifetime. Justyce Gaskins suffered serious burns as a toddler, but has worked to overcome her challenges.

Now, the International Association of Fire Firefighters has awarded her a spot at their International Burn Camp in Washington D.C.

Burn camps are run by firefighter organizations to help young burn victims kids through their traumatic ordeal. Gaskins has attended local camps for years, but this is the first year she was selected to attend the International Burn Camp.

The 13-year-old says she likes the burn camps because, in addition doing normal camp activities, it allows participants time to feel "normal" and not self conscious about physical and emotional differences.
