South Sacramento Goodwill Employee Killed in Work Accident

SACRAMENTO -- An employee at a South Sacramento Goodwill store had a tragic accident, killed while trying to fix a trash compactor. It happened at the Franklin Blvd. store, which closed early Friday.

"I was just surprised to see that there's nobody here," said wouldbe customer Jennie Windman. "This time of day usually ever slot is filled up with cars."

The only thing customers knew is what was on a sign taped to the front door and from caution tape surrounding the store's loading dock. But Goodwill's Regional Vice President of Operations, Richard Abrusci, confirmed an employee was killed.

"We are obviously saddened by the events that happened at our outlet toda," Abrusci said. "Our hearts are with, not only his friends and family, but our coworkers."

Around 2 p.m. Friday, the Sacramento Fire Department got the call of a man with severe head injuries, rushing him to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento.

Friday afternoon, OSHA investigators inspected the equipment in the store's loading dock area. An OSHA spokesperson told FOX40, the employee was trying to see if a bin was aligned with some type of compactor when the accident occurred. Cleaning the trash compactor is a task other employees say they do often.

"I clean it all the time, but I've never had it happen like this," said Abdul Jalil, an employee at the Goodwill Franklin location.

Coworkers of the victim say he's 24-years-old, and had only started working at the store within the last few weeks. His aunt also works for Goodwill, but at another location, according to his colleagues.

"He's a nice guy," Jalil told FOX40. "He's a good worker and that's all."

While the store plans to reopen tomorrow, the loss of life here will make it difficult to conduct business as normal.

"We've asked our employees to tell us how we can help them," Abrusci said. "We have onsite folks here helping through any grief that may be necessary."

The identity of the victim will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner's Office, pending notification of next of kin.
