MARYSVILLE — Local law enforcement agencies are asking people to keep an eye out for clowns.

Monday afternoon, a Modesto resident shared a photo of a man in a clown mask at the Vintage Fair Mall. In the 24 hours since it was posted, the photo was shared thousands of times.

Modesto Police say they’ve gotten several reports of clown sightings, but those people have always disappeared before officers could respond.

In Fairfield, police say social media threats were made Monday evening against a number of schools in the area, including Fairfield High School. Investigators said the threats had references to clowns, and turned out to be copycat hoax threats.

Since August, “creepy” clown sightings have been reported across the country. In some instances, people dressed in clown costumes have tried to lure children into wooded areas.
