SACRAMENTO — The National Weather Service will issue a flood watch for the Sacramento region on Thursday.

Potentially heavy precipitation is expected to impact Northern California starting Thursday.

The watch affects the Motherlode area, northern San Joaquin Valley, southern Sacramento Valley and the west slope of the northern Sierra Nevada.

Heavy rains are possible along the Interstate 80 corridor and south on Thursday. Between 2 and 5 inches of rain is possible for the foothills.

In the Sierra foothills, the National Weather Service will be issuing a winter storm watch from Thursday morning until Friday evening.

The affected area includes I-80 over Donner Pass, Highway 50 over Echo Summit and Highway 88 over Carson Pass.

Watch out for slippery roads, low visibility and chain restrictions. In the higher elevations, up to 16 inches of snow is possible.
