RANCHO CORDOVA -- A grass fire was ignited in Rancho Cordova, near Zinfandel Drive and Douglas Road.

Metro Fire reports 52 acres were burned from Zinfandel Drive to Sunrise Boulevard.

Abandoned structures in the area were destroyed in the flames. The area once belonged to Mather Air Force Base and is now a protected wetland preserve.

Around 5 p.m. Metro Fire reported the grass fire was contained.

It was not immediately known what caused this fire, but another brush fire caused by an illegal firework grew to more than 50 acres last week.
