Suspect Shot During Standoff in South Sacramento

SACRAMENTO -- A suspect was shot by police during a standoff on Bellini Way near 50th Avenue.

The incident began around 7:04 p.m. when a bail bondsman contacted police to report he needed backup at the location.

Officers were told the suspect had fled into the bathroom with a handgun. Officers repeatedly attempted to talk the man out of the bathroom but he refused.

The suspect fired his gun in an unknown direction at least once while in the bathroom.

Police say a 17-year veteran fired his gun after the suspect displayed the gun and pointed at officers. The suspect was struck several times.

According to the Sacramento Police Department, the suspect was transported to a local hospital and is listed in as stable.

No other information has been made available.

Bail bondsman Topo Padilla said he believes the bondsman in the incident made the right call in alerting the police when the situation escalated. Neither Padilla nor any of his staff were involved in the Bellini Way incident.

Padilla said the work of a bondsman, much like the work law enforcement officers do, has become more and more dangerous in recent years.
