Man Found Dead Along Levee in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento Police are investigating a homicide in the area of Norwood and Fairbanks avenues, the agency announced in a tweet Sunday morning.

Around 7:20 a.m., a citizen was walking in the area and found a man with at least one gunshot wound lying on the levee.

The man hasn't been officially identified, but neighbors say he went by the nickname "Dirt." They say he was known affectionately around the neighborhood. And neighbors often gave him food and clothes.

"You know, when he needed something we tried to help in out because that’s what you do," one neighbor, who identified herself as Tiera, said.

Tiera says the man man lived in an abandoned car parked behind an apartment complex, just yards away from where he was found dead.

She says she didn't know the man well, but says he was a talented singer and had dogs that he loved and cared for. She can't think of a reason someone would want to hurt him.

"If he was into something he didn't bring it around here... he was a nice guy," she said.

Police haven't released motive or suspect information. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sacramento Police Department.
