Hi everyone! My name is Marin Austin. A lot of journalists will tell you they’ve wanted to be a reporter their entire life– for me, it’s always something I had to do, not something I wanted. I cannot imagine doing anything else. I have spent much of my career in the world of investigative and consumer journalism; at Dateline NBC, the ABC News San Diego I-Team, and NBC Nightly News. I am a graduate of the USC Annenberg school (FIGHT ON!) and a proud Columbia University Graduate School Alumna. But, I’m most proud of my ½ Dominican – ½ Israeli roots!
I’m known around the newsroom for…
Telling stories with a little bit of spunk, sometimes.
What keeps me going…
Red Bull and chocolate power bars get me through my day, along with exercise. But, I’m not just talking about the gym. I’m very competitive. Think there’s a sport you can beat me at? (E-mail me, marin.austin@fox40.com)
Why FOX40?
There’s nothing more powerful than television journalism: truth, sound and the moving image. To this day, I can remember stories I watched almost 15 years ago. (If you asked me about the article I read in yesterday’s newspaper, I couldn’t tell you a thing about it!)
My greatest TV moment
When I was working with NBC Nightly News, I interviewed over 80 Olympic athletes in preparation for the NBC 2010 Vancouver coverage
TV moment I’d like to forget
When I was younger, I began an internship at a TV station. To prepare for the first day, I researched every reporter and anchor at the station. On the very first day, I went up to one of the top reporters and commended him for a story he did a few months back. I told him, “I was blown away when you reported live, on your front lawn, as your house burnt down in the background. It was incredible to see that type of courage on television.” He looked at me, and said, “That guy works at the other station in town.” Wupps!
If I had free time, I would…
Spend more time with my big Berense Mountain Dog, Maxie, travel and paint.
