Douglas Kishiyama, a chef  at The Plum is excited about  the new portable park that is schedule to go in on his street near the corner of K and 23^rd.

“That’s very positive . I think it will fit right in with our restaurant. We’re here for the people. We’re here to promote health,” says Kishiyama.

The co-owner of the Plum has mixed feelings about the Parklets. “It could have some liabilities to it. It’s a great idea, it’s nice, it only looks like it could hold a select few people,” says Rey Ortega.  He also thinks the Parklets could become a haven for the homeless.

Jim Brown , the Executive Director of the Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates is heading up the project and he says they will display one model in six different locations this summer. The first showing is set to be at the Golden Bear Restaurant.

“We will demonstrate to people what these things look like and when you put them in a parking space. What you can experience when you sit down in one and it will give people an idea of where we could begin with all of this,” says Brown.

The Parklets are also designed to beautify the streets and get people motivated to exercise. A business can expect to pay at least 18-hundred dollars to apply for a permit.  If granted, the cost of a Parklet could range between four and 20 thousand dollars.

The bruises on the face of a 90-year-old Stockton woman will hurt for a while, but they haven’t broken her spirit any.

“I couldn’t dance a jig, but I’m quite comfortable to just sit in my chair,” she told FOX40.

Her family requested we don’t mention her name, and they agree, it’s almost a miracle she has enough wits about her to joke considering what happened to her on Thursday.  Police say a man in his 20’s entered the woman’s garage through an unlocked door and attacked her while she did her laundry.

“I remember taking it from the washer to the dryer, and I saw this guy come in the back door and the first thing I know he had his hand on my face.”

The family believes some sort of weapon was used, or the man smashed her head up against something to knock her out.

She lost seven teeth in the beating and needed several stitches, but otherwise is O.K. Her family, in town to celebrate Mom’s 90^th birthday, say this was the second time in the last few months she has been robbed at home.  They also don’t want her living in Stockton alone any more.

“We’re planning something,” said her son Martin.  “We’re going to talk about it some more, but we are definitely going to do something about her living situation.”

Anyone with information about the assault is asked to contact the Stockton Police.

Animals that talk is not something you only see in the movies like Dr. Doolittle. The Sacramento SPCA says it has a dog that knows how to express her feelings.

The 4-month old Chihuahua is quite the chatter box according to Tracie Popma, the Public Relations Manager for the Sacramento SPCA.

Popma explains little Bitty ended up at the shelter after being found roaming the streets in Elk Grove.  “In the YouTube video you can clearly hear her say, I love you,” says Popma.

FOX40 News went to the SPCA to witness the talking dog, while we were there little Bitty kind of sounded like she said I love you. You be the judge.

Some people said they could feel the earth shaking, as the 5.7 magnitude quake made its way through Northern California.

There were even reports of damage near the earthquake’s epicenter in Plumas County.

The California Earthquake Authority says on average, more than 100 earthquakes happen each day in California. Some of the quakes are large enough to cause damage to your home. It makes you wonder if earthquake insurance is worth it.

“Rates vary depending on where you live,” said Tully Lehman, Information Officer with Insurance Information Network of California.

“If you live in the Central Valley, there’s low risk for earthquakes. It can happen and you can purchase earthquake insurance.”

If you don’t want to shell out the cash, Insurance Information Network of California offers up these tips.

Before An Earthquake

• Determine the earthquake potential for your home site by looking at fault-zone maps and general soil maps. These are available at city and county planning offices. If your home is in an earthquake-prone region, contact licensed and experienced contractors to determine any mitigation steps needed.
• Most damage from earthquakes occurs from furniture or possessions toppling over.
• Move heavy items such as pictures, mirrors and tall dressers away from your bed.
• Secure tall furniture, bookcases and filing cabinets to wall studs with lag bolts or L-brackets.
• Move the heaviest objects from top to bottom shelves. Add lips to shelves to prevent items from sliding off, and secure cupboard doors with latches that will prevent the doors
  from opening during an earthquake.
• When possible, secure computers, television sets and stereo equipment with brackets and straps.
• Make sure overhead light fixtures are securely fastened to the ceiling.
• Take a home inventory of your possessions. Keep it in a safe location outside of your home. It is a good idea to back up the home inventory with pictures or videotape of the items, and keep receipts and appraisals.

During An Earthquake
At Home

• Most earthquakes are over in less than 30 seconds. Remain calm and stay where you are until the shaking stops.
• If you are indoors, duck or drop down to the floor and take cover under a sturdy desk or table.
• Move away from windows, fireplaces, wood stoves and heavy furniture or appliances.
• Stay inside — you may be injured going through a door or window, or be hit by falling glass, bricks or unstable facades that may fall outward from buildings.

Outside

• Move into an open area, away from buildings and utility lines. Be alert for falling rocks, landslides and runaway vehicles.
• If possible, move your car out of the flow of traffic and stop. Avoid stopping under overpasses, bridges, large trees, light posts, power lines or large signs.
• Stay inside your car until the shaking stops.

An investigation is underway into the death of a man in police custody.

Officers were called by a woman working at a Metro PCS store along Folsom Boulevard Friday evening who said there was a suspicious man inside with her.

She later called back and said she felt threatened by the man. When cops arrived at the store, the man was holding the doors shut and refused to come out.

Officers were able to pull the door open, and then began to struggle with the man.

At some point during the struggle, police tell FOX40 the man passed out. Officers then rushed him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

SACRAMENTO-

A man has serious injuries after being shot while sitting in a car.

Friday evening, the victim and three other men were sitting in a car near a parking lot along Norwood Avenue near Bell Avenue.

Officers say a group of men approached the car and opened fire. Only the one man was hit, and was shot several times in the upper body.

Police were called to the parking lot and the victim was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

All the suspects ran away from the area, and officers have not released any description at this time.

When a young Chihuahua arrived at the shelter, they had no idea she had a secret talent.

The four-month-old dog’s bark kind of sounds like “I love you”.

Andrew Johnson was arrested in San Diego in connection with the death of a man in Citrus Heights.

SAN DIEGO-

A third man wanted in connection with a murder in January is now in custody.

Andrew Johnson of Citrus Heights was arrested last week in San Diego. He is wanted in connection with the death of Jack Swaim. Johnson is now back in Sacramento County to face charges.

Christopher Langlois and Jeffrey Powell are already facing charges for Swaim’s death, they were arrested in January.

Investigators enlisted the help of numerous agencies to help find Johnson, who they learned was receiving help to flee.

Swaim was found dead outside his own on January 5^th. Police at the time said he had been hit by an unknown object.

Citrus Heights Police now say Swaim was an “unintended and innocent victim”, and that the incident in January was “not a random crime”. However, because the investigation is waiting charges by the District Attorney’s office, they did not want to say anything else.
