A jury has decided a Yolo County mother was of sound mind when she killed her daughter last year.
The jury rejected Aquelin Talamantes’ plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. The jury’s decision comes four days after they returned a guilty verdict for Talamantes in the death of her daughter.
In September, Talamantes drove from Davis to Sacramento with the body of her five-year-old daughter in the trunk. An autopsy revealed the young girl had drowned.
Her defense attorney argued during the murder trial Talamantes suffered from mental illness, caused by abusive relationships.
On Friday, the jury found her guilty of first degree murder and causing the death of a child. Tuesday morning, they found her plea of insanity “not true”. Talamantes will face 25 years to life with the possibility of parole when she is sentenced.
