CHP says investigators are still trying to figure out why the driver of a Toyota Prius veered into oncoming traffic Saturday night on Highway 50 near Placerville, causing a fatal collision.

Ofc. Quinn Cuthbertson would not be surprised to learn the driver swerved to avoid hitting an animal.

November is a particularly common month for deer verses car collisions because deer are in the middle of mating season.

Ofc. Cuthbertson advises drivers to hit the deer instead of swerving to avoid it.

“The majority of vehicles would lose control,” he said.

The crash on Highway 50 may prove to be a deadly example of that.
