A Penryn woman, mentally disabled, severely handicapped and legally blind has given birth to her child.
Casa Del Mar Care Facility, run by Res Care, reported the disabled woman’s pregnancy in early December. Sheriff’s deputies determined she had been raped and was six months pregnant. Since then, they had been waiting for the baby to be born to get the child’s DNA.
The Placer County Sheriff’s Office has already obtained DNA from all the men that they believe had contact with the disabled woman. The next step is comparing the two and finding the person responsible for getting her pregnant.
Unfortunately, this story is all too common. Leslie Morrison with Disability Services of California says 80 percent of mentally disabled people in care facilities are victims of assault. The best way for families to protect their loved ones it to stop by unexpectedly, and look for signs that things are different or wrong. Changes in personality could be the biggest indicator.
It will probably take forensic investigators several weeks before they have a suspect.
