Gemily West is smiling, despite a very difficult and painful week.
West, along with her boyfriend and four dogs, was struck by a hit-and-run driver last week near Garfield Avenue and Engle Road in Carmichael last week.
All four of West’s dogs were killed.
“It hurts to lose all of them especially all at once. But they died happy. We were walking home from playing fetch,” West said Monday after coming home from the hospital, one week after the crash.
The impact also severed the leg of her boyfriend, Harrison Long-Randall. The suspected driver, 31-year-old Paul Walden, appeared in court Monday.
West recalled how the driver didn’t stop as if he didn’t see them, and how Long-Randall tried to keep her out of harm’s way.
“He took the blunt force of it,” West said. “He’s such a hero.”
West says she misses her dogs, which were more like children to her, but is thankful for the memories. She’s also thankful for the memories she’s allowed to continue to make with her boyfriend.
Both have healing to do, both mental and physical, but West says this experience has made the bond between her and her boyfriend even stronger.
